Back to School Tips

.) Acknowledge that your student may be anxious about the first day of school and remind them of the parts that they enjoy.

.) Resume bedtimes and sleep schedules about a week before school starts.  You may want to have your child start setting an alarm clock.

.) Communicate to your child's teacher that you would like to be actively involved and would appreciate regular feedback.

.) Review cafeteria menus and plan accordingly.  Most schools offer lunch menus online.  This will allow you to plan on packing a lunch on days that you deem appropriate.

.) After school, review the information that has been sent home by the teacher.  This usually includes contact information for the teacher, information on extracurricular activities, calendars, etc for the upcoming school year.

.) When scheduling extracurricular activities, consider homework. Ask your child's teacher which days will be major homework days.

.) Designate one spot to be a homework area.  If the designated spot is the kitchen table, then homework should always be done at the kitchen table.

.) Institute a rule that the TV should always be off during homework time.

.) If you see that your child is having difficulty with any of their courses, consider a tutor before the problem escalates.  However, remember that a tutor can also combat classroom boredom by providing enrichment activities.

.) For older students, a college and career path is highly recommended.   When developing a college and career path, consider acceptance requirements and scholarship parameters.  A test prep course may be beneficial to you.
