How to pick the right tutor?
Today, parents and students have more choices than ever before when it comes to choosing the right tutor.  So how do you know what will work best for your child?  At Appleton, our goal is to help people find the best fit for their needs.  Knowing what questions to ask can make a big difference in finding the right tutor for you.  Below are some things to take into consideration when choosing a tutor.

Services They Offer:
Some tutoring services provide individual tutoring while others only provide classroom or group style instruction.  Individual instruction is best for most students.

Fees and Rates:
A lot of services charge expensive registration fees, testing fees, and other “hidden” fees.  Plus, the hourly rates can get very expensive and may vary based on your student’s grade level and the material being tutored.  Make sure you are getting the best value for your money.  Shop around!

Student Ratio:
Look for the lowest student-to-tutor ratio.  Student-to-tutor ratio is the number of students working with each tutor at a given time.  A lot of places claim to provide “individual instruction,” but in fact have several students working with each tutor.  One-on-one is the best!

Contracts or Commitments:
Be careful when picking your tutoring provider.  Some will require you to sign a contract or commit to a minimum number of hours.  Avoid this if at all possible.  Make them earn your business!

State Approved:
Look for tutoring services that are state approved.  This means that their services meet state standards for quality.

Tutor Qualifications:
Ask the tutoring service about their tutors’ qualifications.  Make sure you feel comfortable with the tutor your child will be working with.
